The Hardware Components of Virtualization

Session Abstract:

There are many components of today's computer. These components have gotten better and faster and more capable every year. Here we will take a look at all the components needed to virtualize a server today. We'll talk about their performance as well as their capabilities and how the capability of each component contributes to virtualization capability. We'll look at:

  • Processors
  •
  • Memory
  •
  • I/O
  •
  • Fiber Channel
  •
  • Storage
  •
  • VLANS
  •
  • SR-IOV
  •
Along the line we'll discuss how the growing capabilities of each of these enhances the capabilities of virtualization.

    Learning Objectives:

  • Understand what has changed that makes virtualization better now than before.
  •
  • Learn the capacity and understand the capability of shared resources on IBM Power Systems.
  •
  • Learn some of where components are going in the future.
  • Audience:

Any Power Systems Administrator doing virtualization or planning for it.
